Total Apps: 132   Goals: 112

Johnny was with St Joseph’s when he signed for United on a provisional form, making his debut in 1951. He made an early impression scoring all four goals in a 4-2 win against Stenhousemuir. He spent the latter part of 1952-53 at Brechin City on loan.

His United appearances were infrequent in his first four seasons, due largely to the in-form Peter McKay and Johnny’s two years of national service. After he was demobbed in June 1955, he became a Tannadice legend.

In season 1955-56, he was top scorer with a Club record 43 goals that still stands. He was top of the scoring charts at Tannadice again in the next season. His form continued unabated in 1957-58 and he put in a transfer request, leaving to join Clyde in December 1957 for a fee of £5,000.
