UNITED KICK OFF TOUR WITH VICTORY

10th July 2002

United's pre-season tour in Austria got off to a positive start when the Tangerines defeated Ituano Sao Paulo 2-1 yesterday. The Brazilian Premiership outfit and 2002 Sao Paul Cup Winners took the lead early in the second half, but United fought back to win the match thanks to a Danny Griffin free-kick and a Stephen O'Donnell goal.

The tropical temperatures at Bad Goisern last night should have favoured the South Americans who had already produced some outstanding displays in Austria dispatching Salzburg and Sturm Graz, but it was the Brazilians who struggled with the continued forays of the United attack into the Ituano box. They had four players yellow-carded and defender Erivelton sent off.

It was also confirmed today that the third match of the Austrian tour versus German third division side Rot Weiss Erfurt has been moved to Sunday, 14th August 2002 with a 4.00pm kick-off.
