The Dundee native joined his boyhood club as a schoolboy in 1972, turning professional at just 15. Initially an attacking midfielder, he transitioned into a standout centre-half during the 1970s.

He earned his first Scotland cap in 1977, going on to amass 35 international appearances throughout his career - a club record. His unforgettable strike against Brazil during the 1982 FIFA World Cup stands as a timeless emblem of both audacity and skill in world football.

Narey played a vital role in United’s success, winning the League Cup in 1979 and 1980, and contributing to our historic 1982/83 Scottish Premier Division title.

In European competitions, Narey was part of our European Cup semi-final run and a memorable 1986/87 UEFA Cup journey, including a win over Barcelona. However, they narrowly missed both the UEFA Cup and Scottish Cup.

He gradually receded from the starting XI in the early 90s, but made a notable appearance in the 1994 Scottish Cup before retiring.

Across his 22-year career at Dundee United, Narey collected three winner’s medals and was awarded an MBE in 1992 for contributions to football.

Inducted into United’s Hall of Fame in 2008, Narey remains a beloved figure in the club’s history, symbolising an era of remarkable success!
