SMITH LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW SEASON

2nd August 2002

Twenty-four hours ahead of the kick-off to the 2002-2003 campaign, Manager Alex Smith was contemplating the challenge ahead when taking on newly promoted Partick Thistle at Firhill Stadium tomorrow. "We've completed the final training session today and now the count-down is on to what is set to be a big occasion. Partick will unfurl their First Division flag from last season in front what will no doubt be a full house and provide us with a competitive and exciting game. Our task is to cull their enthusiasm early on in the game to take control of proceedings and reap all three points. It is going to be very difficult. And, clearly, there is the poignancy that Partick were playing their last Premier League match at Tannadice (pitured) when a goal in injury time went a long way to sealing their fate some six years ago. They'll be looking to lay the ghost of that defeat. I know Partick are very worthy SPL members and a Club that carries the respect that goes with it. They are well supported like ourselves with loyal and faithful supporters."

"For us, it's a season I have been looking forward to and I know we should be a stronger team all-round and more consistent. I want to provide our supporters with fast and entertaining football and I hope we can be a team in the top echelons of the league. But our ultimate aim is not only a top six position but a European spot, and it is this I would like to achieve most for our supporters."
