2010

In 2010, the Club inducted the following players into the Hall of Fame:- Dave Bowman, John Clark, Davie Dodds, Stewart Fraser, Billy Hainey, Ian Mitchell and Paul Sturrock.

 

DAVE BOWMAN

Dave was with Hearts and Coventry City before he joined United in a deal which also brought Jim McInally to Tannadice in 1986. A highly influential player, he collected runners-up medals in the UEFA Cup final, a League Cup final and three Scottish Cup finals before earning a Scottish Cup winner’s medal in 1994.

Dave’s uncompromising style often had him in trouble with referees, but it also made him hugely popular with the fans. He was a regular in the side for twelve seasons and was rewarded with a testimonial against Dundee in August 1995. He was released in 1998 and joined Raith Rovers.

Dave had played for Scotland at schools, youth and Under-21 level and during his time with United he was recognised at full international level. He is currently with United as a youth coach.

 

JOHN CLARK

John was an ‘S’ signing from Musselburgh Windsor in March 1981. In 1983 he was part of the Scotland youth squad. He began his career as an attacking player but was converted to a defensive role.

He collected runners-up medals in one League Cup final, three Scottish Cup finals and the UEFA Cup final. He was a regular in the side for several years and a big favourite with the fans.

In August 1990 he quit Tannadice to work in his family business but within a month he was back at United Then in February 1994 he moved to Stoke City for around £200,000 and in August 1994 he was granted a testimonial against his new club.

 

DAVIE DODDS

Davie joined United on an S form from Sporting Club in December 1972. He initially starred in the reserves and was gradually introduced to the side from 1976 and spent a short time at Arbroath on loan. 

By 1979-80 he was well established as a first team player. Davie was joint top scorer in the following season and again in 1982-83 also collecting a Premier League championship medal that year to add to the League Cup winner’s medal from December 1980. He also has runners-up medals in two other League Cup finals and two Scottish Cup finals. His career at Tannadice ended, with a move to Neuchatel Xamax of Switzerland for £175,000 in July 1986.

He represented Scotland at schoolboy, youth and Under-21 level before he won two full international caps.

 

STEWART FRASER

Stewart signed from, Banks O’ Dee in 1957, playing his first game as a trialist. He was quickly established as a first pick. Re-signed for 1958-59, he then faced two years of obligatory national service. He returned to Tannadice in time to aid the promotion push to the First Division in April 1960. 

Over the next four years, he was rarely out of the side and gained international recognition playing twice for the Scottish League. In his second game for Scotland, he recorded a hat-trick against the League of Ireland. 

Late in season 1964-65, injury kept Stewart sidelined and after that, he was unable to regain a regular place in the side, playing mainly in the reserves until he was released in May 1967 to become player/coach at Brora Rangers. 

 

BILLY HAINEY

Billy signed from Partick Thistle in 1966. At the beginning of season 1966-67, he became the first player to come on for United as a substitute in major competition and, at the same time, the first United substitute to score a competitive goal in a League Cup tie on 13th August 1966. 

Billy was a regular in the line up that season and attained legendary status when he scored against Barcelona in United’s first ever European match. Out of the side by October 1967, he handed in a transfer request. There were no offers and he was released in April 1968. 

 

IAN MITCHELL

Ian signed in July 1962 aged just sixteen. A former schools international, he joined United, initially on an amateur form from Woodburn Athletic. He became the youngest player to turn out for United when he made his debut and by the end of his first season, he was firmly established as a first pick.

He signed professional forms in May 1963. For the next seven years he was rarely missing from the line up and was top scorer in 1963-64, 1966-67, 1967-68 and 1969-70. Ian was capped at Under-23 level during his first spell at Tannadice.

In July 1970 he moved to Newcastle United for a fee reported at £50,000 but just fourteen months later he was back in a swap deal that took Alec Reid to Newcastle United. Ian spent the next two seasons with United in a supporting forward role and was released in September 1973, joining Falkirk.

 

PAUL STURROCK

Paul achieved the status of Dundee United legend. He signed as a sixteen year old from Bankfoot Juniors and by 1975-76, his was a frequent name on the team sheet and went on to become a regular in the line up as a one club player for the next fifteen years. 

In his time at Tannadice he helped win the League Cup in 1979 and 1980 and the League Championship in 1982-83. He also collected runners up medals in two League Cup finals, four Scottish Cup finals (including one as an unused substitute) and a UEFA Cup final.

In 1976-77, he was top scorer; joint top in 1980-81; top in 1981-82; top in 1984-85 and he became the first Scottish Premier League player to net five goals in one game. He was also a Scotland professional youth, Under-21 and full international

After his playing career ended, he became a coach at United and then moved into management at St Johnstone, returning to become Manager of United in September 1998, before resigning at the start of the 2000-01 season.
