U14S CLASH WITH WORLD ELITE IN PORTUGAL

2nd November 2022

Last week, our U14s headed for Portugal to compete in the second annual Portimao Cup, a collection of 20 teams from 13 different countries around the globe.

A tournament brimming with future stars from some of the world's most prestigious clubs, the Portimao Cup offered our youngsters the chance to test themselves in a best v best environment whilst simultaneously creating lifelong memories.

The U14s were grouped with eventual finalists Juventus and New York City, boasting strong performances versus both.

A 2-0 win over tournament hosts Portimonense S.C. and goalless draw with FDS Finland saw United qualify for a top ten play-off.

Liverpool, Everton, Crystal Palace, PSG, Benfica and RB Leipzig joined the Terrors in the top ten, whilst fellow Group A side Juventus claimed Portimao Cup glory for the second year running.

United secured a ninth-place finish after victories against B93 and Soon On Top Academy in the knockout phase.

'We want to develop better people as well as better players'

Paul Cowie, Academy Director, was delighted with the beneficial impact of the Portimao Cup for our U14s.

Cowie said: "Since the world opened back up following the Covid pandemic, we have been able to provide all of our age groups with lifelong, memorable experiences that have helped to not only facilitate player and staff learning, opportunity and the strengthening of Our Culture, but also provide our players with the opportunity to compete against high-quality opposition, and experience different cultures.

"This trip to Portimao was another excellent opportunity for our players to take Our Style to tournaments and compete strongly against some of the world’s best academies. It is very much part of our culture that we want to develop better people as well as better players.

"Our Additional Games Programme is a key component in achieving Our Vision, and we are grateful for the support of the Owner, Board, and Sporting Director for their support of this initiative."
