YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING LIKE THE MIGHTY FINN

22nd September 2017

Dundee United Hall of Fame legend Finn Dossing is currently visiting Scotland on holiday and took the opportunity to participate in the Tannadice Tour today.

Dundee United Business Club's Tom Cairns accompanied Finn, his friends and family around Tannadice, in particular, spending a vast amount of time looking over the fantastic Jerry Kerr era display that is currently on show in the Club's United in Memories display.

Finn, now 76 years old and inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of the first inductees in 2008, joined United at the age of 23 arriving at Tannadice under a cloak of secrecy for trials in December 1964. He netted four goals in a closed doors game and starred in a second trial match before he was signed along with Orjan Persson for a total of around £10,000.

Finn made a scoring debut against Hearts at Tynecastle a few days later but did not impress some of the watching reporters. However, they quickly changed their opinions, as the tall Danish centre-forward became a Tannadice scoring sensation. The introduction of Finn Dossing, Orjan Persson, Lennart Wing and Mogens Berg turned a mundane season that threatened relegation into a memorable one that pushed United into a respectable mid-table finish.

The centre-forward scored an incredible 21 goals in just 19 league appearances, including a hat-trick against Hibs in January 1965.

With the season coming to a close, United entered the Summer Cup, where Dossing grabbed seven goals as United went through the Sectional Ties against Aberdeen, Dundee and St Johnstone without dropping a single point.

A further goal from the Dane in the semi-final against Partick Thistle and the final against Motherwell, unfortunately, wasn't enough as United narrowly lost out on silverware in June 1965.

Despite his scoring exploits at United as a professional player, Finn was unable to represent his country due to their strictly amateur policy at the time.

In his second season at United, he topped the Club's scoring charts again, with 27 goals, including one of the most famous hat-tricks in United history when he netted three against Dundee in a 5-0 win in September 1965.

He also netted hat-tricks against Motherwell, at home and away, and holds the record for the fastest goal scored by a United player, netting after just 14 seconds against Hamilton Academical in October 1965.

Dossing's goal scoring exploits were instrumental in United's fifth-place finish, the Club's highest ever league placing at the time, as the club qualified for European football for the first time.

His scoring rate dropped in 1966-67 and injury kept him out of the team as they went into European competition for the first time, missing both legs of the Barcelona tie, as well as the away leg in Juventus.

However, he had the satisfaction of scoring the only goal of the game at Tannadice against the Italian giants in his only European match. In the summer of 1967, Finn was part of a sixteen man squad that travelled to the United States to represent Dallas Tornado in the United Soccer Association.

With his contract nearing its end, in 1967-68, he made only eight appearances before returning to his home in Denmark in December 1967, signing for Aalborg. After two seasons there he returned to Viborg, and at the age of just 33 retired from the game to open a clothing store in his hometown.

His record at United is remarkable, ranking him amongst the Club's legends and it was truly magnificent to see Finn once again grace Tannadice today.
