Dundee United 2 Dumbarton 2

29th April 2017

The fight for second place will go to the final day after a disappointing draw at Tannadice today.

By Tommy Mckay

United began the first half in confident fashion and could, and probably should have been ahead in the first minute however  Murray couldn't keep his shot down.  It was Murray again with the chance just seconds later however neither he, nor Mikkelsen could connect with Spittal's cross. Dumbarton finally succumbed to United pressure on the 22nd minute.  After winning the corner himself, Tony Andreu bulleted a header into the roof of the net after a great near post delivery from the corner from Spittal. v Dumbarton (H) 29.4.17 On 35 minutes Dumbarton equalised.  The corner came in from the left, was half cleared, and Robert Thompson finished with a point blank header past Cammy Bell after ball had been played back into the box by Carswell. Into the second half and Dumbarton started the better of the two teams and had a few half chances but nothing that troubled Bell in the United goal. Murray again came close to adding to his goal tally, this time a well worked throw-in resulted in a shot curling just past the post on 57 minutes. On 67th minutes Dumbarton took the lead.  After a misplaced United pass in midfield, Dumbarton broke forward through Stanton and the ball was played into Vaughan who finished with aplomb. On 79 minutes United drew level.  Ali Coote, with a shot from 22 yards, was parried by Martin but Mikkelsen was on hand to turn in the rebound. On 90 minutes Mikkelsen had the chance to win it for United however his free header from Spittal's corner was inches over the bar. The fight for second place will now go to the last game of the season however United's fate is no longer in their own hands and will ironically look to today's opponents Dumbarton to take points from Falkirk on the final day of the season. Despite having had enough chances to win it was not to be United's day and they had to settle for a share of the points.
