SCORELESS DRAW FOR UNITED'S CANADIAN PAIR

12th June 2000

United pair Jason de Vos and Pat Onstad's successful summer at international level continued with World Cup progress in the early hours of Monday morning. Skipper Jason and goalkeeper Pat helped Canada to a goalless draw against Cuba in Winnipeg. That meant Jason's first leg winner in Havana was enough to see the Canadians through to a group section involving Mexico, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Unfortunately for United the two now look set to miss the pre-season tour of Ireland because the first of the group games take place on July 16 or 18, while they will also be required to travel across the Atlantic for further fixtures early in the new season. The club, though, were happy to hear of the Canadians success and not surprised either_it was their 15th international unbeaten. "As ever we are delighted when any of ur players received international recognition," says club spokesman Niall Scott. "Of course the down side is that they will miss some of the pre-season and be required to travel early next term, but that is why Paul Sturrock is looking to strengthen the depth of the squad. "We want quality players here and they will always be liable to receive international recognition."
