United Support Suicide Awareness Campaign

24th September 2016

September is officially suicide prevention awareness month and both Dundee United and Morton today warmed up in designated T shirts on Saturday to play their part. Scotland has a higher suicide rate than the rest of the UK and the aim of today’s campaign is to highlight the importance of talking to someone, be it a family member, a friend, the Samaritans, even a stranger. Suicide is preventable. Former footballers such as Clarke Carlisle, Lee Hendrie and Leon McKenzie have openly spoken about their battle with depression and failed suicide attempts in the past. Within the media and sporting world, film star Robin Williams, Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke, and former Wales manager Gary Speed have tragically taken their own life over the last few years. Club captain Sean Dillon said: “It is important that we remove the taboo surrounding issues of mental health in both football and wider society.  It is great to see both teams wear the t-shirts today and I hope we achieve a greater awareness of this issue by doing so.” For help and more info, please visit www.wearethechange.help. We Are The Change is an organisation that was set up after two friends tragically took their own life just six months apart from each other, both leaving behind young families.
