UNDER-19S DEFEAT RANGERS

23rd April 2010

Stuart Armstrong's double handed theU19 League title to Celtic and hoisted the Tangerines into second place in the table.

Facing a physically stronger Ibrox outfit, United edged a first half in which chances were few and far between.

However, the second period was far more expansive with United getting their noses in front five minutes after the restart from the penalty spot.

Striker John Murray was brought down in the box and Armstrong duly delivered despite Rangers keeper Scott Gallacher getting his hand to his kick.

Rangers then pressurised the young Tangerines, but the defence held firm.

And when it was breached keeper Mark McCallum came to the rescue with tow outstanding saves.

That said the Tannadice teenagers always looked dangerous on the break.

The visitors were lucky to survive a second penalty appeal when the outstanding Ryan Dow was downed in the box after 66 minutes.

Ten minutes later, Dow provided the cross from which Armstrong headed over with the goal at his mercy.

But Armstrong made amends two minutes from time when he latached on to a Dow pass, side-stepped a defender before burying the ball in the bottom corner from 12-yards to seal victory.
