ROBERTSON GOAL SEALS DERBY VICTORY FOR RESERVES

2nd November 2004

Tony Docherty fielded a side containing six Under-19 players in addition to the more experienced players on show with Paul Ritchie making his come-back in defence. The Dundee side was made up of mainly youth players with only Larsen and Jack having much in the way of senior experience.

United dominated much of the first half and both Callaghan and Samuel had chances right at the start. Duff had the ball in the net on five minutes, blasting home a Callaghan cross but the effort was ruled offside. Samuel had two good chances before the break but both were just wide and Duff saw his twenty-yard effort punched clear. Callaghan, Duff, Kenneth and Robertson all had attempts on goal whilst Dundee's limited response was a single shot by Voigt that Herschel took easily.

Easton replaced Ritchie for the second half and after the interval United went on he attack again with Samuel looking particularly dangerous down the left and in the first minute of the half his deflected shot was turned round the post by Jack. Robertson then fired one in but it lacked power. Samuel continued to be a thorn in the Dundee side and he lay in crosses that caused all sorts of problems before being replaced by Andrew. Dundee had a brief spell when they looked dangerous but after Callaghan had a shot blocked United took the lead. Some good passing play released Andrew on the right of the box and his cross found Robertson who blasted the ball past Jack for the only goal of the game. United continued to look the more likely but chances in the final fifteen minutes were few and it ended 1-0 to United.

Tony was very pleased with the performance and after the match he said, "We dominated much of the first half and we deserved the win. I felt we kept concentrated at the back and as a result I think Dundee had only one shot in the first half while we controlled the midfield areas and had several chances although we never put any of them away. We asked the lads for more of the same after the break and to have a bit more belief in front of goal. Every player played his part in the win but the most pleasing aspect is the way all the younger lads played. They are all doing exceptionally well both in the Reserve and Youth Leagues and their league positions testify."
