NO GOALS IN UNDER-21s v DUNFERMLINE

19th April 2004

Tonight's Under-21 match against Dunfermline was played at Forfar and United lined up with seven players from the Youth squad in the side.

The Tangerines had the bulk of play and created a number of chances throughout the match but failed to find the net. There was only one shot on target in the first half, and that came from a Conway effort that lacked any real power. Other than that, Bell glanced a header wide, Conway fired a narrowly past and Abbot and Duff both hit shots over the top in a frustrating first half. For their part, Dunfermline rarely threatened and if was fully thirty minutes before Atha fired in their only shot of the first half and it was well wide.

The second half began with Clarke forcing Jarvie into a good save and the visitors' only other contribution of note after the break was a shot from Atha that skimmed off the bar. Ross Gardiner was stretchered off very early in the second period as United continued to dominate proceedings but for all their creative play they could not find a finish. Duff lifted a shot well over the top and Conway headed wide but the best chance fell to Samuel right at the end but he fired wide also.

After the match a disappointed Owen Coyle commented: "Given how well the lads have been playing, we were disappointed to see the standard drop in tonight's game. There were a few opportunities created but the overall collective effort was less than we expect."
