CHAIRMAN AND MANAGER PRAISE FANS

12th April 2004

Dundee United Chairman Eddie Thompson and Manager Ian McCall were united in their praise of Dundee United fans at the derby.

Eddie Thompson said: "The United fans were magnificent from start to finish and I'm sure were influential on the team's fight-back. It was great to see home ends packed in this way and I would like to pay tribute to each and every one of our supporters. I am told that quite a few season ticket holders even paid cash for an extra ticket for the game to help off-set the loss caused by the boycott, and this was a wonderful gesture that is greatly appreciated."

Manager Ian McCall echoed these comments, adding: "I understand that only a handful of United seats were unsold and this was evident in the tremendous backing the team received. It really does make a big difference and highlights the team spirit about the place these days.

"It is still within our own hands to achieve a top six finish. While it was disappointing not to secure this yesterday, we can take a lot of positives from the game. Jason Scotland is fast becoming a fans' favourite. The only reason he did not start the game yesterday was down to the frenetic atmosphere and pace of the derby. Once this settled down, he came on to make a telling and exciting contribution to the game. He will undoubtedly start a few games from now on.

"Another player who will definitely feature is Billy Dodds. He was absolutely terrific and was an example to all the other players. His attitude is excellent.

"A number of players picked up injuries yesterday but we are hopeful that they will all be fit for the game against Dunfermline."
