UNDER-21S CRUISE TO WIN OVER HEARTS

14th April 2004

For tonight's Under-21 match at Tannadice, Charlie Miller was the only Dundee United player over the age of nineteen in the side. Similarly Hearts fielded Phil Stamp in team made up largely from the Hearts youth side.

It was a very entertaining match with both sides showing some good touches and most pleasing for the coaching staff must have been the performance of Miller who controlled the midfield area and scored a peach of a goal. Sixteen-year-old midfielder Greg Cameron was given his debut at this level and showed that he has tremendous potential with some lovely touches throughout the ninety minutes.

The first half belonged to United and Miller opened the scoring in only four minutes with a stunning twenty-five yard free kick and he was unlucky not to score on three more occasions. The second United goal came on twenty-six minutes when Conway fed the ball into the path of Bell who then ran on to fire a low drive across goal and into the far corner.

The second half was a bit slow to getting going and the visitors showed some determination to pull one back when Tierney netted a header at the back post fifteen minutes into the half but a quick fire double from Conway mid way through the second period ended Hearts chances of a comeback and indeed United could have gone further ahead as they again took control of the game.

Owen Coyle was full of praise for the young Tangerines and said after the match "The young players again acquitted themselves very well and some of the football tonight was a joy to watch. The boys are playing well together and are developing a winning mentality and showing the right attitude. We are reaping the benefit from all the hard work we are putting in. I also have to say that Charlie Miller was a perfect role model for the youngsters tonight. After all he has achieved in the game, it was still fantastic to see him give every ounce of effort in this Under-21 game. The way he played was an example to those around him and all credit to Charlie for tonight's performance. He showed a great attitude and appetite for the game. Another player who did well was Greg Cameron. For a boy who only turned sixteen last Friday he came in to the side and did exceptionally well. He is one of several young players at the Club who are making good progress and we are all excited with the potential they are showing. But we won't get carried away because they still have a lot to learn. We will keep working with the youngsters and hopefully we can keep them improving."
