DERBY WIN FOR UNDER-21 SIDE

12th April 2004

At Dens Park this afternoon a Dundee United Under-21 side, containing seven of the Youth squad in the starting line-up, beat local rivals Dundee by the odd goal in five.

Paul Jarvie was in goal at the beginning but an injury he was replaced by Gavin McCann at half time. The back four were Stuart Abbot, Garry Kenneth, Ross Gardiner and Stuart Duff with Kenny Jarvis, Steven Bell, Graeme Holmes and Barry Callaghan in midfield. Up front, Collin Samuel partnered Aaron Conway. In the second half Callaghan and Jarvis were replaced by David Robertson and William Easton.

It was a highly entertaining game with both sides committed to their respective causes but United had more of the play and the eventual victory was deserved. Chances came at both ends before Kenneth blasted home the opener six minutes before half time but Dundee were level within a minute through Clark. Three minutes later United were in front again when Kenneth crossed in for Gardiner to head home.

The action continued in the second period and play was flowing from end to end when an error by the Dundee defence left Samuel the easy task of lobbing in United's third seventeen minutes into the half. The Tangerines eased off briefly and this allowed the Dark Blues back in to the game and they hauled one back when Clark got his second with just less than twenty minutes left. United continued to look the more likely and the home side had their moments also but it ended with a United win.

After the match Own Coyle expressed his delight with the outcome and said "We were obviously thrilled with the result. If we had taken a bit more care in the final third we might have scored more goals but considering how young the team was, we did exceptionally well. Dundee also had a young side out of course and it was a good game of football and a great learning experience for the boys. It's hard to pick out individuals from so many good performances and there is so much to be pleased with for the future of the Club but Graeme Holmes and Ross Gardiner showed up really well today in a side that all played their part."
