WINNING FINISH FOR YOUTH TEAM

16th April 2004

Dundee United's Under-19 team played their last game of the current season at Balgownie Playing Fields against Aberdeen and concluded the league programme with a 3-2 victory. Coach Tony Docherty reverted to a 3-5-2 formation with Gavin McCann in goal behind Gary Kenneth, Ross Gardiner and Steven Anderson. Stuart Abbot and William Easton were the wing backs and in midfield it was Eddie Smith, Kenny Jarvis and Barry Callaghan. The front pairing were Nicky McDonald and Joe Andrew.

Easton had a chance early on but it was Aberdeen who opened the scoring within fifteen minutes but it was against the run of play. However, Jarvis pulled one back and then Gardiner headed home for the second week in succession from a Callaghan corner to put the young Tangerines in front. Just before half time the referee spotted an infringement that no one else witnessed and awarded the home side a penalty from which they scored to make the score 2-2 at half time.

United were in complete control of the second period and created a lot of chances but could not find a winner until, with five minutes to go, the referee awarded a penalty in favour of United and Andrew scored from the spot to make sure United left with a deserved full points. Gregg Cameron was the only second half substitute replacing McDonald.

After the match Tony was full of praise for his players saying "I am pleased for the boys. They have won five of their last six games and when you consider that most of them have also been turning out regularly at Under-21 level that is a wonderful achievement. We have finished the season really strongly and it augurs well for next year."
