CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT

14th April 2004

Dundee United Chairman Eddie Thompson today added his congratulations to the efforts of the Manager and all concerned in securing a first ever top six finish for the Club.

Mr Thompson said " Following last night's result we now know that Dundee United will be in the SPL 'top six' for the first time since this was introduced. In the recent past we have spent more time worrying about relegation rather than a top six placing.

A lot of the credit must go to Ian McCall and his coaching staff, Gordon Chisholm, Tony Docherty and Owen Coyle and, of course, the playing staff. When Ian McCall's first full season started last August I asked everyone to give him time to allow him to get his new players to gel together. This took some time but as the season progressed the form improved considerably, particularly at our own home at Tannadice.

I think the best example of our progress is to look at the league table back in mid September of last year when we were bottom of the SPL. Obtaining a top six place underlines the extent of the improvement we have made as the season progressed.

Despite this progress, much work remains to be done. Ian McCall and I have shied away from getting down to wage budgets and agreed that we wouldn't discuss these until we knew if we had made the top six position. Discussions between us can now take place and the Manager and I will obviously be taking into account the changing financial circumstances surrounding Scottish football today.

Meantime though it's congratulations from the Dundee United Board to Ian, his coaching staff and his playing squad. We can now look forward to some exciting games between now and the end of the season.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to once again thank the United fans who are so important to us and who have got behind us in greater numbers as the season progressed. Their contribution to our campaign so far this season has been immense."
