HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTINUES AS McINTYRE NETS WINNER

31st January 2004

United's recent improved form at Tannadice continued with a hard fought but well merited 1-0 win over visitors Dunfermline. The result, courtesy of a Jim McIntyre goal, his sixth of the season and twenty-first of his United career, meant that Ian McCall's side have now collected thirteen out of a possible fifteen points from their last five home league matches.

Constant snow flurries from early morning were not a concern as the undersoil heating meant that the playing surface was in near perfect condition come kick-off. United went at Jimmy Calderwood's side from the start but had Paul Gallacher to thank for keeping the Tangerines level at the break courtesy of some excellent goalkeeping.

United attacked the East Stand end in the second half and went ahead courtesy of a superb McIntyre volley. Dunfermline then began to exert some pressure and Ian McCall brought on Club Captain Derek McInnes for Andy McLaren to bolster his side.

The Tangerines held out fairly comfortably and the three points not only lifted Arab spirits following last Sunday's derby reverse but also lifted United back up to seventh place in the league, behind Hibs on a goal difference of one.

United have the chance to build on their improving home form when Hibernian come calling a week on Tuesday at Tannadice Park where another home win would take the Tangerines above their visitors from Easter Road.
