DERBY VICTORY FOR UNDER-21s

26th January 2004

Owen Coyle's Under-21 side met neighbours Dundee tonight in the local Derby at Tannadice and both sides fielded teams containing a mix of youth and experience. United lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Tony Bullock in goal behind a back four of Stuart Abbot, Steven Anderson, Ross Gardiner and Stuart Duff. In midfield, Craig Easton offered the experience alongside Graeme Holmes and Kenny Jarvis with Collin Samuel operating in a wide left position. Up front Jason Scotland partnered Stephen McGowan.

The first half was played at a hectic pace with the sides evenly balanced. Samuel was having some success in the early stages and his crosses into the danger area gave the visitors a few nervy moments. Scotland and McGowan each had attempts on goal but failed to hit the target. The Dens Park side had chances also with Cameron firing over the top. Linn missed two good opportunities when he too blasted over the top and Jablonski was unlucky to see his shot from close range hit the post.

In the second half, Aaron Conway replaced McGowan and the Tangerines took an early lead when Scotland pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire low past Soutar. Conway made it 2-0 to the home side when he headed home a flick on at the far post from a well-flighted Holmes corner. In between these goals, Lovell twice had the chance to equalise but he fired wide the first time and then failed to connect with a through ball. United too had chances and Samuel had a good opportunity before Conway scored. He also fired wide late in the game after Holmes had sent him through.

With the lead secure United finished the stronger side but a challenge on Hutchison in the box gave the Dark Blues a penalty in the final minute and Cameron scored to make the final score United 2 Dundee 1.

After the match Owen Coyle was obviously delighted with the result and commented "I think our win was fully deserved and there were some outstanding performances. It was a good team effort with some good play from our boys. The players showed a tremendous appetite for the game, from Tony Bullock in goal right throughout the side."
