EXCELLENT WIN FOR UNDER-21s

10th November 2003

Ian McCall took charge of the Under-21 side tonight at Forfar for the home fixture against Hibernian. The match was only two minutes old when the Tangerines went in front. It was a move started by Kerr (pictured) which ended with Holmes finding the net after he took a pass from Hunter. United had further opportunities as the first half progressed, and Griffin was twice denied by Hyldgaard in the Hibs goal. Kerr was the playmaker with his prompting releasing the front pair of Scotland and Samuel to good effect and both had shots at goal either saved or narrowly wide. The visitors had chances too with Jarvie in good form, twice making important saves and Hibs hit the bar. Dobbie and Shields also had shots but both missed the target.

The second half began with McGowan on for Scotland and United picked up where they left off with Kerr showing some excellent form in midfield, winning the ball and spraying passes to his team-mates. One move he started set up Samuel but the ball was just nicked from him before he could capitalise. McGowan was getting himself into good positions and he was unlucky not to find the net with a great turn and shot in the box that left the Hibs defence baffled. Jarvie kept up his good work with an outstanding save early in the second period and the home side passed up a couple of opportunities before McGowan sealed the win with ten minutes left. He latched on to a rebound to score the second after Paterson had hit the post. Hibs had few chances in the second half and in the final minute, Nicol of Hibs was sent off for a challenge on Griffin.

Owen Coyle spoke highly of the side after the match and he said, "Over the piece it was an excellent performance and the win was thoroughly deserved. The lads played some great passing football and Mark Kerr in particular was outstanding but I would add that everyone played their part tonight. Our front two looked really sharp and we also saw a great attitude from Gary Bollan and Danny Griffin. The young lads all played well too and it can only benefit them to play alongside the more experienced boys."
