DUNFERMLINE TOO STRONG FOR UNITED

1st November 2003

United travelled to Dunfermline today to meet the Fife side on their new synthetic pitch for the first time but it turned out to be an unhappy day for the Tangerines.

Although there was some early promise from United, Dunfermline had more of the ball in the first half and created chances to go in front. The best opportunity, though, fell to United after Jim Paterson (pictured) worked an opening but Stillie in the Pars goal saved.

The second half was very much all Dunfermline with United's forays upfield being limited and the home side took the lead early in the half when Thomson rose to head home a Dempsey free-kick.

The Fife side then passed up chances to go further ahead but in the final minute the two substitutes, Labonte and Mehmet combined to set up the latter for a goal that sealed the win for the home side.
