The Under-21 side travelled to meet Celtic tonight at New Broomfield and were beaten by the same score line as the senior squad was on Saturday.
Owen Coyle's side lined up in the usual 3-5-2 formation with Paul Jarvie in goal behind a back three of Danny Griffin, Steven Anderson and Gary Bollan. The right wing back role was filled by Andy Hunter with Stuart Duff on the left, and in the middle, Charlie Miller (pictured) was partnered with Mark Kerr and Graeme Holmes. Up front, Collin Samuel was paired with Jason Scotland.
United could not have had a worse start and conceded three goals in the first ten minutes to a lively Celtic. Crainey netted the first in three minutes from a free-kick and Beattie scored the second five minutes later with a low drive. With ten minutes gone, Kennedy pounced on a loose ball in the box to score the third. The Tangerines pulled one back through Charlie Miller from the penalty spot after Jason Scotland had been brought down and the Trinidadian striker had another couple of chances before half time but it was the home side who scored again before the interval when Guppy netted from a corner kick by Wallace.
In the second half there was little to choose between the sides but Beattie hit the bar before Celtic made it 5-1 with five minutes remaining and it was a second for Crainey as he scored with a shot high into the net.
After the match Owen Coyle commented that he felt every one of the goals conceded was avoidable. He also said, "The boys know themselves that there were a number of individual errors and we cannot afford to let that happen against a team with the quality Celtic have. On the positive side we saw an excellent performance from Jason Scotland in the first half and over the whole game Mark Kerr did well again in midfield. It was also good that Charlie Miller managed a full ninety minutes."
