YOUTH DERBY DEFEAT FOR YOUNG TANGERINES

24th October 2003

In the first of three derby games over the next few days, Dundee came out on top with a two-goal win at Whitton Park, Broughty Ferry, this afternoon.

In the early exchanges Bell, Andrew and Robertson all got in behind the Dundee defence but were denied by timely challenges and the best Dundee could muster was a free-kick which went straight into the arms of McCann. United were the better side in a hard-fought first half and, on the quarter hour mark, Molloy's effort came back off the bar after good work by Jarvis and Anderson to make the opening. Robertson was involved again in two good passing moves which set up first Conway and then Hunter but both fired wide. After all their early efforts United were fortunate not to go a goal down on 26 minutes when McCann was caught off his line. However an unorthodox save by the keeper prevented a goal as he rushed back and, facing his own goal, he hooked the ball away right-footed just before it crossed the line.

On the half-hour mark Dundee did take the lead when Voight latched on to a ball over the top of the United defence and raced forward to shoot past McCann from just inside the box. Five minutes later the same player fired a snap shot well over the top as the Dark Blues tried to take command and Voight broke through again. This time he beat McCann, only for Jarvis to clear the danger. Molloy and Jarvis set up good moves as the half came to its conclusion but both times the action broke down at the edge of the area.

United started the second half at a furious pace and their first effort through Jarvis was held by McCafferty in the Dundee goal. A minute later, the keeper foiled Conway after the striker made a good surging run into the box. Molloy was out of luck again as he saw his shot come off the bar when he connected at a corner kick. A few minutes into the half McCafferty made a great save from Anderson but then the game seemed to become a midfield struggle for a while with McCann a bit busier but making two easy stops. With 65 minutes gone, Anderson headed narrowly over from a Jarvis corner and another good passing move ended with a Bell shot deflected for a corner. The home side then worked an opening with United pushing forward and Scott Robertson burst forward only to fire wide. United responded with Conway first pulling a shot wide and then watching as the keeper held his powerful shot on the turn.

United continued to push forward, looking for an equaliser but it was Dundee who scored a second which had more than a hint of offside about it. With United defending on the half way line, two Dundee players broke forward after getting the break of the ball. Scott Robertson drew McCann before Reilly accepted his forward pass to slot the ball into the unguarded net with only a minute remaining.
