TANGERINE TARTAN TRIO

9th January 2003

Yesterday evening in Portugal near the Scotland Under 21's training camp, three United players were involved in a friendly between Rainer Bonhof's young squad and German Third Division outfit, FC Freiburg. Jamie McCunnie, Mark Wilson and Stephen O'Donnell all featured in an exciting match of eleven goals. The German side went ahead in 20 minutes, but Bryan Prunty equalised two minutes later. A penalty put Freiburg ahead once again on the half-hour mark, but in 38 minutes, Kris Boyd (Kilmarnock) equalled the scores again only for the young Scots to fall behind again by the time of the interval. The Scottish outfit re-emerged almost a different team after the break with only Jamie McCunnie remaining in the frame. The revamped eleven very swiftly lost two goals in succession, but pulled one back when Craig Beattie (Celtic) converted a penalty he had earned himself. Moments later, Freiburg reinstated their three-goal advantage. Bonhof's young men however showed great determination and spirit and retrieved two goals, one by Clarkson, and the other through a second Beattie penalty.
