ArabTRUST
- the Dundee United Supporters' Trust

Do you want to have a say in the way Dundee United is run? Do you want to have your voice heard, other than on match days? If so, look out for ArabTrust, the Dundee United Supporters' Trust, the exciting new development for supporters, due to be formally launched within a few months. You may have heard about it, you may have read about it, but you may not be sure what it is, or why it's being established. This will give you some of the answers.

Put simply, the purpose of a Supporters Trust is to forge a closer, formal, relationship between clubs and their supporters by providing fans with a greater, and legally recognised, say in the affairs of clubs. It does so via the share structure of the club concerned. A Trust holds shares on behalf of a club's supporters and uses the collective voting power of these shares to maximise their influence. A Trust can either purchase shares on behalf of it's members, or can accept the voting rights of shares already issued, or it can do both. Trust membership is open to all supporters of a club and it must operate democratically, on the basis of 'one member, one vote'.

There are now well over 60 Supporters' Trusts throughout the UK, all of them assisted and actively promoted by a government led initiative, Supporters Direct. Supporters Direct in Scotland, launched earlier this year by Sports Minister Mike Watson (a life long Arab!), has already helped Trusts at Aberdeen, Celtic, Motherwell, Morton, Falkirk & Raith Rovers. They are now helping with the setting up of a Dundee United Supporters Trust. Already good progress has been made by a small team of volunteers, including representatives from the Federation, the Dundee United Business Club and United for Change, as well as 'unaffiliated' fans.

The Trust is being registered as an Industrial & Provident Society or Friendly Society in other words, in order to provide a robust legal structure, give the membership maximum protection and ensure independent scrutiny. Membership fees will be set at an affordable level - only
